J&MGA. W.A. – Kingfisher Gallery

The Jewellers & Metalsmiths Group of W.A. (J&MGA. W.A.) hold a themed member’s exhibition every two years. This years theme is the Ring and 42 members have taken up the challenge to design and make up to a maximum of five rings each. This exhibition, The Ring Project will showcase the diversity and talent of Western Australian Metalsmiths & Jewellers.

A group exhibition at Pablo Fanque

The digital age is seeing letters and numbers anew, with words and equations taking on a decorative role.

a.l.i.Alexander is interested in chemical formulas and map coordinates detailing her equations on rings and things, Richard Burns reconstructs and reframes the discarded flotsam and jetsam of life, Lucy Folk details her obsession with food by stamping her favourite Pasta recipes into sterling silver, Madhulika Ghosh reveals her Buddhist influences by embossing Tibetan script on to fine porcelain vessels, Melbourne artist Nicholas Jones tears pages of books to create entwined sculptures; Erin Keys’ steel and silver brooches illustrate her fascination with the visually complex Asemic language; Darren O’Brien wheel throws ceramic ware and applies the markings found on the roads and pavements around him; Brisbane ceramic artist Mel Robson writes her favourite recipes such as that for pumpkin scones on paper thin porcelain vessels; selected sonnets by Pablo Neruda have been immortalized on rings created by Rik Juod; Deb Taylor delights in the play of words and uses them provocatively on her neckpieces.

The Pieces of Eight Workshop Group exhibits for the first time together.

The exhibition comprises of various works made by the workshop residents at Melbourne’s Pieces of Eight. The six exhibiting artists are Nina Ellis, Lucy Folk, Rachel Gorman, Melanie Katsalidis and Suzi Zutic. Pieces of Eight is an innovative gallery and workshop in Melbourne’s North Fitzroy which showcases contemporary jewellery and object based work. This is the first time these jewellers have exhibited together, and the individual methodology of each artist reveals the diversity of their approaches to making wearable work.In November this exhibition will tour to Inform Contemporary Jewellery in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The individual methodology of each artist reveals the diversity of their approaches. For Ellis, it is related to the hardy weeds of the Australian landscape; manifested in blackened steel, silver and sprays of colour. Folk, immerses herself in the colour and pleasures that food inspires, creating a range of delights in joyful ways.

Both Gorman and Katsalidis utilise materials in unconventional ways. Gorman employs ceramic, metal and paint to re-create versions of costume jewellery; playful and colourful. While Katsalidis turns to the beautiful nature of organic pearls, particularly black pearls to assert a contemporary vision of modern day glamour.

In the work of McRae and Zutic, a certain romance exists. McRae draws on the sublimeness of shapes; oxidised silver, set with tiny dark blue sapphires that sparkle like stars. Zutic’s ring series (modelled in wax and set with petite gems) have a timeless quality, like they could have been exposed in the uncovering of an ancient roman dig.

Flip Side – Velvet da Vinci

JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design Centre

Jewellers from the Metals Design Studio look at the Flip Side in their exhibition currently showing at Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco. Exhibiting artists are Alisa Dewhurst, Kath Inglis, Tassia Joannides, Sim Luttin, Sally Mahony, Lauren Simeoni, Belinda Newick and Melissa Turner

Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco presents “Flip side: Jewelry from JamFactory”, a show featuring new work from eight established Australian jewelers. Sue Lorraine, Creative Director of the Metals Design Studio and curator of Flip side, explains that the intention of this exhibition was to push these artists into a new dimension of their work. “There is always more than one point of view, always several ways to look at something, from the back and the front, the inside and the outside, the upside and the downside, the safe side and the flip side.” However, instead of creating drastically new pieces for the exhibition, Lorraine found that their mature and assured practice has allowed them to push the boundaries of their everyday work. For the last 30 years, JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design Centre, located in Southern Australia, has been a center for the design, production, exhibition and sale of work by leading and emerging Australian designers / makers.

The artists exhibiting in the show are: Alisa Dewhurst, Kath Inglis, Tassia Joannides, Sim Luttin, Sally Mahony, Lauren Simeoni, Belinda Newick, Melissa Turner.

Tassia Joannides uses the common zipper as her medium. She has given this one-dimensional form body and substance. The armbands intentionally blur the boundaries between the inside and out. By unzipping and zipping they become part of the wearer, an intimate experience.

Melissa Turner uses stainless steel to create fluid and soft forms of beauty. There is no front or back, no pin back, no pendant, no ring shank, only fluid forms. These forms stand as an act of defiance to the jewelry world, without a wearable function.

Sally Mahony uses primarily stainless steel in her work. She manipulates the material to both extremes, making it corrode and shine to a satiny, seductive black. The brooches peel away from the body exposing fabric or metal beneath.

Kath Inglis again is a manipulator of materials. She carves PVC into three-dimensional wearable sculptures. Kath is inspired by the colors of shadows and reflections in water. Just as water has no top or bottom, no starting or ending point, her jewelry is a continuous ripple on the wearer.

Lauren Simeoni’s brooches reflect the impact materials have on the world. She is a lover of materials and the impact these material leave. In this series of brooches she has printed nostalgic images on aluminum and reveals a time of personal innocence.

Sim Luttin made this body of work while recently living in the U.S. As a visitor she was hyper-aware of her surroundings. Her necklaces reflect and magnify nature with their seed-like forms as vessels strung from dark beads.

Alisa Dewhurst and Belinda Newick have used the body as their starting points. Alisa crochets necklaces illustrating the repetitive genetic message of DNA, the building material that makes up each individual. She mimics this process in crocheted wire. Belinda uses the necklace to discuss the fragility, fertility and fecundity of the female anatomy.
